Discover Denmark's maritime heritage

Many of Denmark’s harbour towns feature heritage harbours where visitors can board vintage sailing ships and explore local islands and shores. And there are historic maritime attractions and festivals nationwide. Here are a few of the many maritime attractions Denmark has to offer.

Fyn RundtVintage ferry in the Funen Archipelago
MS Helge is a small vintage ferryboat that takes you on a round trip from the town of Svendborg to several destinations, including one of Denmark’s most picturesque villages, Troense, with its thatched homes and 17th century Valdemar Castle.

The Funen vintage regatta
How about joining a regatta of 40 vintage schooners as they set sail? The annual ‘Fyn Rundt’ regatta is open to paying passengers, whether you sail for just a day or all six days of the regatta. Ports of call are made at several historic towns, including Kerteminde and Faaborg. For information call +45 6223 3023.

Maritime Center Denmark
Svendborg is home to a national maritime centre complete with a heritage harbour. Daily sailing trips on vintage schooners take you to local islands, such as Skarø. Vintage dinghy sailing
The waters off Denmark’s southern archipelagos were once full of a unique kind of wooden dinghy called a ‘smakke’. You can rent a reconstructed ‘smakke’ from the heritage boatyard on the island of Strynø and go seal-watching.
HjejlenThe Commander’s Farm on Rømø
The island of Rømø in the Wadden Sea National Park is home to a 16th century farm that once was the home of a wealthy sea captain and whaler. At the time whaling in the North Atlantic was a lucrative business. A whale skeleton is exhibited in the barn. The Commander's Farm.

The Frigate ‘Jutland’
The maritime heritage centre in the town of Ebeltoft features the world’s longest vintage frigate, ‘Jutland’, which is fully armed with cannons. You can also visit the heritage boatyard and take daily sailing trips on old schooners. The town is located in the Mols Bjerge National Park.

Tall Ships Race 2013
Europe’s largest and most magnificent classic regatta takes place every year and features classic school ships and large vintage vessels. The 2013 race starts in the city of Aarhus where the ships will stay between 4 and 7 July.

Tordenskiold Days
An annual costumed heritage festival is held in the town of Frederikshavn celebrating the age of the Norwegian-Danish sea hero Tordenskiold. The festival seeks to recreate the historic events that took place during the Great Northern War (1709-20). Tordenskjold Days

World’s oldest riverboat
In the town of Silkeborg you can drift through the lakes on board the world’s oldest operative paddle steamer, Hjejlen – 151 years of service and still going strong! The trip takes you past rolling hills and woodlands. And by the lakes you also find the AQUA freshwater park.

West coast fishing boats
The wide-open sandy beach of Løkken in Northern Jutland is one of the few places in Europe where sizable classic wooden fishing vessels are still tugged onto the sandy shore.
ErtholmeneErtholmene – rugged sea fortress
The 300-year-old heritage-listed naval fortress straddling the rocky islands of Ertholmene (aka Christiansø) in the Baltic Sea is home to just 96 souls. Ertholmene can be reached by post ferryboat from Gudhjem on Bornholm.
The Viking Ship MuseumThe Danish Maritime Museum
The Danish Maritime Museum is currently located at the Kronborg Castle in Elsinore, which enjoys UNESCO World Heritage patronage. In 2013, the museum will be relocated to a contemporary dockland facility designed by award-winning Danish architect Bjarke Ingels.

Rowing in a Viking ship
At the Viking Ship Museum in Roskilde you can join daily sailing trips as an oarsman on reconstructed Viking ships. And you can visit the heritage boatyard to watch craftspeople and marine archaeologists at work.

The Royal Danish Naval Museum
An exceptional collection of old ship models is on display at the Royal Danish Naval Museum, many of them 300 years old. The museum is located in an old seaman’s hospital by one of Copenhagen’s historic canals.

Fejø fruit boats
Since the 1930s, vintage sailing ships have journeyed each September from the small island of Fejø south of Zealand to the Nyhavn Canal in Copenhagen with apples and pears for the city dwellers. Today, the revenues from this traditional voyage go to support children’s community activities back home on Fejø.
