West Sealand

West Sealand make up a green bite of Denmark's largest island Zealand. Landscape-wise the region is full of contrast - from the hilly landscapes of Odsherred and the beautiful beaches of Sejerø Bay of the north through the flat, embanked Lammefjord and the Åmosen bog with the fertile soil, the large Sorø forests to the Great Belt coast's beaches and cliffs.

There are many old and cosy market and harbour towns in West Sealand; a couple of them are situated at the bottom of pretty fjords. In addition, there are a great number of small villages.

West Sealand has a long coastline. Along the Great Belt there are many nice and child-friendly beaches with shallow waters and in Sejerø Bay and along Kattegat, you find some of Sealand's best beaches with fine, white sand and dunes. Near Isefjord, salt meadows intermingle with great beaches and shallow waters. So no matter the direction of the wind, you can always find a sheltered spot.
West Zealand - OdsherredOdsherred has the sea and water on three sides. Therefore, the light is special and when the weather is clear, there are beautiful views as far as the eye can see - e.g. from Sealand's Point over Sejerø Bay and from Klintebjerg of Kattegat. The hilly landscape also has many burial mounds and other remnants of the past.

By Havnsø at the bottom of Nekselø Bay, you find Vesterlyng which is Sealand's largest moor area. Vesterlyng is protected, but you can swim at the lovely beach and the area is open to the public. There is also great access to the beautiful and undulating Røsnæs north of Kalundborg. A hiking path will lead you along the coast's high cliffs and almost all the way to the lighthouse. The tip of Røsnæs is Sealand's westernmost point with more hours of sunshine than many other places in the country.

The nature reserve Hov Vig is located east of Nykøbing S. A bike and hiking path runs through the beautiful wet area with a rich bird life which you can study from a bird tower.

South of Sorø are the beautiful Tystryp-Bavelse Lakes in a beautiful, undulating manor house landscape with large fields and forests and through it runs Sealand's largest stream - Suså. There are amazing views of both lakes and the stream, which is very popular with canoeists and anglers, and since 2003, it has been possible to experience breeding sea eagles.
West Sealand - RingstedIn the region you found the cathedral city of Roskilde. The Roskilde cathedral is the resting home of a large number of Danish royals and at the Viking Ship Museum you can experience five 1000 year old Viking ships which were found in Roskilde Fjord.

In Nykøbing S, which is Odsherred's main town, you find a cosy market town environment and a number of galleries exhibiting art and handicraft products. Rørvig is a popular holiday town and the ferry to Hundested embarks from the small harbour. On Sealand's Point is Røgeriet (The Smokehouse) in Havneby town designed by none less than the world famous Danish architect Arne Jacobsen.

Slagelse and the fjord town Holbæk are busy market towns and the old ferry town of Korsør experiences a redevelopment of the harbour front after the Great Belt Bridge has replaced the ferries. Kalundborg is still a harbour town with ferries to Århus and the island of Samsø, and the old five towered church Vor Frue is the symbol of the town.

In Ringsted, you can feel the presence of history at Sct. Bendt's Church with the many royal graves from medieval times, the same applies to Sorø where the beautiful abbey church has many noble graves - among others is Copenhagen's founder bishop Absalon buried there. Next to the church is Sorø Academy right next to Sorø Lake and the Academy Garden with nice paths along the lake.

The market town Skælskør is situated between fjord and cove and in the surrounding area you can see the manor hourses of Borreby and Holsteinborg – Denmark's famous fairytale writer Hans Christian Andersen often visited the latter.
West Sealand - NekseløSejerø is a beautiful and peaceful island with an undulating landscape and many small swimming beaches. The old church has fine fresco paintings and there are several burial mounds on the island. Ferries leave from Havnsø to Sejerø island. Also the small Nekselø island is reachable by ferry from Havnsø. With its beautiful nature and undulating landscape, the island is a popular destination for a day out.

The Great Belt islands Agersø and Omø can both be reached by ferry from Stigsnæs near Skælskør. Both are small oases with beautiful, unspoilt nature and nice hiking paths.
West Sealand - Kartofler fra LammefjordenThere are many farm shops in West Sealand with a large selection of locally produced foods, and on a grander scale we can mention Lammefjorden's delicate asparagus, carrots and potatoes.
West SealandWest Sealand is a cycle friendly area with many marked cycle routes. In Odsherred, you find a system of signposted hiking paths and the Tystrup-Bavelse Lakes and Suså stream are often used for canoeing. There are excellent angling areas along the coast and by the Lammefjord Canal there are great chances of catching carps.
West Sealand - Dragsholm SlotThe specific light in Odsherred has always attracted many artists and artisans and there is a great selection of galleries and exhibition halls in the area. Also the now deceased painter Sigurd Swane enjoyed Odsherred and built Malergården (the Painters' Farm) near Plejerup for himself and his family. The artist's home is currently being renovated, but you can already now take a peak at parts of it.

High above Isefjorden is the Anneberg Collections with Northern Europe's largest collection of glass from antiquity to the present day. And West Zealand's Art Museum in Sorø has a fine collection of Danish art from 1700 till present.

West Sealand - Vikingeborgen Trelleborg, SlagelseHistory is very much present throughout West Sealand. At Åmosen (the River Moor) many fine finds from the stone age have been made and in Trundholm Moor, the unique Sun Chariot from the bronze age was discovered. The Vikings left their marks around Isefjorden and near Trelleborg outside Slagelse where you can experience the well-preserved ring castle and the appurtenant museum.

There are many castles and manor houses on West Sealand and a number of the large houses are open to the public, e.g. Dragsholm near Fårevejle - with a knights' hall, ghosts and spooky dungeon, where the Earl of Bothwell was imprisoned for five years.
